Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Seeing a real network work because of something you fixed or set up
  • Mixing computer work with site visits and hands-on testing
  • Learning new technology as networks move from 4G to 5G and beyond
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • On-call duty, night shifts and urgent fault calls, especially in field and operations roles
  • Frequent travel and postings away from home, sometimes in remote areas
  • Public-sector seats are few and come in occasional rounds, so you need a private-sector plan too
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 with Physics and Maths, plus Chemistry or another approved subject such as Computer Science. This is the usual rule for B.Tech or B.E. admission, so check each college's own page. A 3-year diploma after Class 10, or an ITI, leads to technician-level roles.
First degree
B.E./B.Tech in Electronics and Communication (ECE) or Telecommunication, 4 years. For BSNL's Junior Telecom Officer post, the 2026 advertisement also accepted Computer, Electrical, IT, Instrumentation and Radio engineering, or an M.Sc in Electronics or Computer Science (reported).
Entrance exams
JEE Main (NTA) for NITs and IIITs, or your state's engineering entrance exam. BSNL ran its own online test for JTO in 2026 (reported, no GATE score needed). GATE is useful for M.Tech and for some PSU rounds.
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Setting up and testing mobile towers, radio equipment, optical fibre and broadband links. Watching network alarms, fixing faults, improving call and data quality, and planning new 4G/5G coverage. Working with technicians, vendors and the telecom company's planning teams.

A day in the work
You start by checking the network dashboard for overnight alarms, such as a tower that went down or a link with poor quality. Then you speak to the field team, plan a visit and decide what needs fixing first. On some days you go to a site to test equipment, check a new antenna set-up or sign off an installation. Back at your desk, you write reports and work with the planning team on where new coverage is needed. You may be on call during outages or festival rush, when networks are under heavy load.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 10–11Choose Physics, Chemistry and Maths (PCM). Get comfortable with basic electricity, electronics and how a phone signal travels. If you prefer hands-on work sooner, a 3-year diploma or ITI after Class 10 is another way in (see routes).
  2. Step 2 · Class 12Take the engineering entrance exam that fits your target colleges: JEE Main for NITs and IIITs, or a state exam or college test. Choose ECE or Telecommunication as your branch. Dates and rules change every year, so check each exam's own notice.
  3. Step 3 · 4 years of B.E./B.TechStudy communication systems, signals, antennas, networking and optical fibre. Do an internship at a telecom operator, tower company or equipment maker if you can. Learn how 4G and 5G networks are built.
  4. Step 4 · After B.Tech, public sectorBSNL recruits Junior Telecom Officers (Telecom) through a computer-based test, then document verification and a medical exam. In 2026 it advertised 100 posts, with age 20–30 on the cut-off date. The test was held on 23 August 2026 and results were awaited when we checked (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 5 · Training and probationSelected JTOs go through about 10 weeks of Phase-I training, 4 weeks of field training and 6 weeks of Phase-II specialisation, then a 2-year probation. They also sign a bond of ₹6 lakh to serve BSNL for at least 5 years (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
  6. Step 6 · After B.Tech, private sectorMost telecom engineers work for mobile operators, tower and fibre companies, equipment makers or network service firms. Hiring is usually through campus placement or direct applications. You start as a field, rollout or optimisation engineer and learn on the job.
  7. OptionalM.Tech in communication or wireless systems (GATE helps), or short courses in 5G, optical networks or cloud-based core networks.

Ways in

  • B.Tech then BSNL (public sector)B.E./B.Tech after Class 12, then BSNL's JTO recruitment test when a notice is out. Seats are few and come in occasional rounds, so it is not a yearly guarantee.
  • B.Tech then private telecomB.E./B.Tech in ECE or Telecom, then jobs with operators, tower companies or equipment vendors. This is where most openings are.
  • Diploma or ITI, then technician workClass 10 then a 3-year diploma or an ITI. After that, get certified as a Tower Technician or similar under the Telecom Sector Skill Council. The council's qualification pack accepts Class 12, or 2 years of a relevant diploma, as the entry level. You can study for a B.Tech later if you want to move up.

Your real chances

In 2026, BSNL's own letter allotted just 100 Junior Telecom Officer (Telecom) posts across its circles. We could not find an official figure for how many people applied. Most telecom engineering jobs are in private companies, where numbers are not published.

What people earn

Official pay

BSNL JTO (Telecom): IDA pay scale E-1, ₹16,400–₹40,500 basic, plus allowances (2026 advertisement). We could not open BSNL's own notice, so this is reported from secondary pages. Private telecom jobs have no fixed scale.

Starting pay is modest in both public and private jobs. It grows with experience and with skills in 5G, fibre or network planning. Metro posts and big operators or vendors usually pay more than small contractors, and field roles often pay less than planning or design roles.

Myth and fact

Myth: A telecom network engineer spends the whole day climbing towers.
Fact: Tower climbing and site upkeep are done mainly by trained technicians, who have their own qualification under the Telecom Sector Skill Council. Engineers do site visits, but much of their work is planning, configuring, testing and monitoring networks on computers.

For girls and students with disabilities

For BSNL JTO, the 2026 vacancies were split across SC, ST, OBC, EWS and general categories, with age relaxation and a lower fee for reserved categories (reported). BSNL's own letter also asked circles to include PwBD vacancies in the notice. Field work such as site visits can be physically demanding, so check what each role needs. Many planning, design and network-operations roles are desk-based.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Make a simple string-and-cup or torch-signal 'communication line' with friends, then try sending messages in Morse code. Next, ask a parent to show you your phone's signal-strength display in different rooms. Notice how walls and distance change it.
  • Class 10–12Watch free introductory lectures on basic electronics or communication on NPTEL or SWAYAM. Write down five terms you did not know, such as antenna, bandwidth and frequency, and look each one up.Open link ↗
  • College or afterTake a free NPTEL or SWAYAM course on communication systems or wireless networks. Do the assignments and build a small project, such as measuring Wi-Fi or mobile signal strength across your campus and mapping it.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • A telecom network engineer and a tower technician are different jobs. Technicians do the climbing and site upkeep. Engineers plan, configure, test and optimise the network.
  • Do not assume BSNL needs GATE. GATE has been used in some past rounds (reported), but the 2026 JTO round used BSNL's own online test (reported). Always read the notice for the year you will apply.
  • Many public-sector posts come with a service bond. Read it carefully before you accept an offer.
  • India's 5G network grew from about 1.4 lakh base stations in March 2023 to about 5.6 lakh by June 2026 (reported, from a Rajya Sabha reply). Rollout is now shifting towards densifying networks and extending coverage in rural areas.
