Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Working with a team of actors, designers and crew to make something live
  • Reading, interpreting and re-imagining stories and plays
  • Seeing an audience react to a show you shaped
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Income can be irregular, and many directors need a second job for years
  • Long rehearsal hours, evenings, weekends and travel for shows
  • Very few seats in top training courses, and a long climb before you direct professionally
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 in any stream. There is no compulsory subject for a theatre career. English, Hindi or your home language, literature and art help. The 3-year NSD diploma needs a graduation in any subject, so Class 12 is only the first step.
First degree
No single degree is needed. Common routes are: a BA in theatre or performing arts, then an MPA or MA in Theatre (2 years). Or any BA, then the National School of Drama (NSD) 3-year Diploma in Dramatic Arts. Many directors also learn by working in theatre groups.
Entrance exams
NSD runs its own selection: an online application, a preliminary audition or test, then a final workshop. University of Hyderabad's MPA (Theatre Arts) uses a 2-hour written test, then an audition and interview. BA entry differs by university; some use CUET or their own audition (reported).
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Reading and choosing scripts. Casting and rehearsing actors. Guiding set, light, sound and costume designers. Working with a stage manager. Planning the budget and schedule. Staging shows and fixing them after audiences respond. Many directors also act, write, teach or run their own group.

A day in the work
Morning might be a script reading or a talk with the set and light designers about the next show. By afternoon you are in a rehearsal hall with actors, fixing one scene again and again until it feels true. Evenings are often rehearsals or performances, which means late nights and weekends. In between come phone calls about venues, money, permissions and ticket sales.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 7–12Join the school drama club, take part in annual day plays, and try backstage work too (lights, props, stage management). Read plays and watch live theatre when you can. Any stream is fine.
  2. Step 2 · After Class 12Choose a BA. This can be a BA in theatre or performing arts, or any BA at a college with an active drama society. Entry rules differ by university (CUET, marks or an audition), so check each one (reported). Short part-time theatre courses also exist. NSD's 3-month certificate in 2024 accepted Class 12 pass with at least one theatre production, so watch NSD's notices for something similar.
  3. Step 3 · During graduation (3 years)Work with college and city theatre groups. Act, assist the director, do stage management and direct small pieces. Keep proof of every production, such as certificates, brochures and newspaper clippings. NSD's 3-year diploma asks for at least 6 productions and recommendation letters from theatre experts (reported for 2026).
  4. Step 4 · Apply for training (after graduation)NSD's 3-year Diploma in Dramatic Arts, New Delhi, for the 2026–29 batch took online applications from 17 March to 17 April 2026. Dates come around the same time each year, but check nsd.gov.in. Selection is a preliminary audition, then a final workshop (reported). Another option is the 2-year MPA in Theatre Arts at the University of Hyderabad. It needs a written test and an audition, and you must clear the audition whatever your written marks.
  5. Step 5 · 2–3 years of trainingStudy acting, direction, design, theatre history and voice. Stage plays in front of public audiences as part of the course. NSD says its training covers every aspect of theatre, with theory tied to practice.
  6. Step 6 · After trainingAssist established directors, join or start a theatre group, and direct your own productions. Take shows to festivals. Most directors also teach, act, design or work in film, TV or education to pay their bills.
  7. OptionalTeach theatre at a college or university, or do a PhD. NSD says its diploma is recognised as equal to an MA in Dramatics for college and university teaching posts and for registering for a PhD.

Ways in

  • NSD routeAny graduation, plus at least 6 theatre productions (reported for 2026), then the 3-year NSD diploma in New Delhi. This is the best-known route, but seats are very few.
  • University routeBA in theatre or performing arts, then MPA or MA in Theatre at a university such as the University of Hyderabad (2 years, any graduate can apply). This gives a degree and also time to build a stage record.
  • Learn-by-doing routeJoin a theatre group in your city, start as backstage crew or actor, assist directors, then direct. Formal training is not legally required. Training helps with contacts, discipline and some teaching jobs.

What people earn

Earnings vary a lot: early years are often irregular and low, mixing small grants, ticket sales, workshops and teaching, while established directors in big cities or with film, TV or institutional work usually earn more steadily.

Myth and fact

Myth: You can join the National School of Drama straight after Class 12.
Fact: NSD's 3-year diploma is open only to graduates who have already worked in several productions. After Class 12 you can build a stage record through a BA, a university theatre programme or short courses, and apply to NSD later.

For girls and students with disabilities

NSD's seats follow Government of India reservation rules for SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS and persons with disabilities, and older age limits are relaxed for SC/ST and OBC-NCL applicants (reported from 2026 notices). NSD's official page confirms SC/ST/OBC reservation. Check the current brochure for exact numbers and for how disability is handled in the medical fitness check.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Write a 10-minute play with friends or classmates and stage it for your class. Share the jobs (director, actors, lights, props) and rotate who directs next time.
  • Class 10–12Join your school drama club, or volunteer backstage with a local amateur theatre group. Read one full-length play and write down how you would stage it. Read NSD's official website to see what the courses look like.Open link ↗
  • College or afterStart a production log: date, play, your role, venue and a proof document for each show. You will need proof of at least 6 productions for NSD's diploma (reported), and the log also shows your growth.

Good to know

  • No licence or regulator controls the title 'theatre director'. Your reputation comes from the productions you have staged.
  • NSD's 3-year diploma is for graduates, not Class 12 students. You cannot join it straight after Class 12.
  • NSD teaches mainly in Hindi (working knowledge of Hindi was needed for the 2025 batch, reported). Language ability matters in theatre.
  • Start staging plays early. Entry to most good courses depends on your stage record, not on marks alone.
