What the work is like
Running parts of the state government. A Deputy Collector handles revenue, land and law-and-order work in a district. A DSP leads police work. Commercial tax, registration, co-operative and labour officers run their departments. Group 1 posts change from year to year, so check each notification.
A day in the work
A Deputy Collector might start by meeting people with land, certificate or pension problems and signing orders. Then comes a field visit to check a flood-relief camp, a ration shop or a land dispute. Afternoons go to review meetings with tahsildars and other officers, and to files and reports for the Collector. In a crisis, such as a cyclone or an election, the day can run very late.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 10–12Study any stream you like. Build a daily habit of reading a newspaper in Tamil or English. Keep your Tamil and Maths basics sharp, because the exam tests Tamil, general studies and aptitude.
- Step 2 · Degree (about 3 years)Finish any bachelor's degree. The minimum age is 21 on 1 July of the notification year (reported for 2026; 2025 notification also had 21). Upper age limits depend on your category, so read the notification.
- Step 3 · Preliminary examRegister once on the TNPSC portal and apply online when the notification comes (usually once a year). Prelims is one objective paper of 200 questions, 300 marks, 3 hours (reported). In 2025 the fee was ₹100 unless exempt. In 2026 the Prelims was held on 27 September (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · Main written examPaper I is a Tamil eligibility test (SSLC level, 100 marks, you must score at least 40). Papers II, III and IV are descriptive General Studies papers of 250 marks each, degree level, 3 hours each. The 2025 Mains fee was ₹200. The date is announced after the Prelims result.
- Step 5 · Interview and allotmentThe interview is for 100 marks. Your final rank comes from Mains plus interview marks. Posts and services are then allotted by rank and reservation rules. Medical fitness is checked, with a vision standard (Standard III or better for many posts, reported). DSP posts may also have physical standards, when that post is notified.
- Step 6 · TrainingNewly selected officers are trained. A recent Tamil Nadu order (reported) says all Group 1 recruits take a 6-week programme at the Anna Administrative Staff College, and must score at least 50% of 450 marks in the final exam. Deputy Collectors also get district-level field training. Trainees draw pay during training. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 7 · ProbationYou first join as a probationer. Under Tamil Nadu service law, probation can be extended to help you pass required tests, up to a maximum of five years. After you complete it satisfactorily, you become a full member of the service.

Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
The 2025 notification reserved 4% of posts for persons with benchmark disabilities and listed which disability types suit Deputy Collector. The upper age limit is higher for them (44 in the reported 2026 limits), and also for ex-servicemen, destitute widows and reserved categories. Good to know
- The number of vacancies changes a lot. The 2024 notification had 90 posts (reported by DT Next). The 2025 notification had 28 Deputy Collector posts. The 2026 notification was reported to start at 26 posts, and some reports say it grew to 46. Check tnpsc.gov.in for the final count.
- The list of posts changes each year. DSP posts were in 2024 and 2025, but the 2026 list was reported to cover Deputy Collector, Commercial Taxes, Co-operative, Registration and Labour only.
- This is a state service, not the IAS or IPS. State officers may later be inducted into the IAS by selection after many years, but seats are limited. If you want the all-India route, look at the UPSC civil services.
- Never pay anyone for a 'seat' or 'sure selection'. TNPSC only uses its own website and the One Time Registration. Always check the official notification.
