  • Meeting people from many places and cultures
  • Telling stories about history and places
  • Working outdoors and moving around
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Income can be uneven between busy and slow seasons
  • Long days on your feet in heat, rain and crowds

Class 11–12 subjects
Any Class 12 stream is fine for the basic Ministry of Tourism certification. You need 10+2 or equivalent if you are under 40, and you must be 18 or older. Good English is essential. A second foreign language is an advantage.
First degree
No degree is needed for the basic IITF course. A graduate degree is needed for the higher IITG (Heritage or Adventure) level. The older Regional Level Guide rules asked for a graduate degree and age 20.
Entrance exams
IITF Basic: an online end-of-course exam run for the Ministry. IITG: a written exam and a spoken test, where you need at least 50% in the spoken test.
Licence or registration
A Ministry of Tourism certificate or licence is needed to guide officially at ASI protected monuments. Many states also have their own guide registration rules. Check your state tourism department.

What the work is like

Taking groups or individuals around monuments, museums, cities and heritage sites. Explaining history, culture and local life. Handling tour timings, safety and questions. Some guides also work on adventure or nature trails.

A day in the work
A guide usually starts early to meet a group at a monument before the crowds and the heat build up. They walk the group through the site, tell its stories, and answer questions in the language the group speaks. After lunch there may be a museum, a market or a second site, and then the group is dropped at the hotel. The day ends with paperwork, a check of the next day's route and a rest before the next morning.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 10–12Build the base: history, English and, if you can, a foreign language. Read about the monuments and places near your home. No special stream is needed for the basic course.
  2. Step 2 · Age 18 with Class 12 (or Class 10 if 40+)Register on the Incredible India Tourist Facilitator portal (iitf.gov.in) for the IITF Basic course. The registration fee is ₹2,000 and it is non-refundable. SC/ST candidates and some others are exempt.
  3. Step 3 · Basic courseFinish the online modules and assignments. Then pay the separate exam fee of ₹500 and sit the online end-of-course exam. You get certified only after you pass it.
  4. Step 4 · Optional, for graduatesThe IITG (Heritage or Adventure) level needs a graduate degree and a spoken test. It allows guiding at ASI protected monuments across India. The 2025 exam registration fee for IITG Advance-Heritage was ₹2,500.
  5. Step 5 · OngoingKeep your certificate valid. Registration lasts three years and can be renewed, with a refresher course. Police verification is part of the process, so your record must be clean. (reported — check with the official body)
  6. Step 6 · 2026–27 (pilot)Budget 2026 announced a 12-week hybrid training pilot for 10,000 guides at 20 iconic sites, with IIMs and IITTM. Selection rules were not in the notices I could open, so check the Ministry's notices before you plan around it. (reported — check with the official body)

Ways in

  • IITF Basic and IITG (online certification)An online course from the Ministry of Tourism for people aged 18 and above with Class 12. You pay a small fee, finish the modules and pass the online exam.
  • Regional Level Guide (RLG) licenceThe older route: a classroom and field training course run through IITTM, then a written test and viva. The licence is issued by the regional Ministry of Tourism office. The 2011 rules asked for age 20 and a graduate degree, so confirm the current notice before you apply.

What people earn

Earnings vary widely. A newer guide builds a client base slowly, while an experienced guide who speaks several languages and works with good agencies or hotels can earn much more. Income also depends on the city, the season and whether the work is steady.

Myth and fact

Myth: You need a degree or a government job to legally guide tourists in India.
Fact: The basic Ministry of Tourism certification needs Class 12 and age 18, and no degree. A graduate degree is needed only for the higher IITG level, which lets you guide at ASI protected monuments.

For girls and students with disabilities

The Ministry of Tourism's rules give SC/ST candidates and residents of aspirational districts a fee exemption. Ministry notices also mention a 50% fee concession for women. I did not find specific rules for students with disabilities, so check the Ministry's notice before you apply.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Pick one monument or old building near your home. Find three facts about its history from a school library book or a trusted website, and explain them to a family member in your own words.
  • Class 10–12Read the Ministry of Tourism's IITF booklet to see what the course covers and what the rules are. It is a free PDF.Open link ↗
  • College or afterOnce you are 18 or older, check the IITF notice board for the next basic course. Register only if you meet the Class 12 rule and have the fee ready.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • A private course certificate does not by itself give you the government licence. The licence comes through the Ministry of Tourism route.
  • The 2025 guidelines say the IITF registration is valid for three years, and renewal needs a fee. The refresher-course rules in the documents I read are not fully consistent, so check the latest notice.
  • Being a guide is largely self-employed work. Your income depends on tour bookings, the season and your languages.
