Steel Plant Engineer (SAIL)
Looks after blast furnaces, rolling mills and equipment that make steel.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Seeing big machines and real production up close, not just screens
- Solving practical problems with a team of operators and engineers
- A stable government-company job and a steel-town community
- Heat, noise, dust and shift work, including nights
- Postings in plant towns or mines, with transfers across India
- Tough competition: 124 posts in 2025, and a 65% degree-marks cut-off
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths, so you can get into a B.Tech/B.E. course. SAIL itself asks for an engineering degree, not for Class 12 subjects.
- First degree
- Full-time B.Tech/B.E. (4 years) from a UGC/AICTE-recognised college. In SAIL's 2025 notice the branches were Mechanical, Metallurgy, Electrical, Chemical, Instrumentation, Civil and Computer. You need 65% marks, averaged over all semesters (55% for SC/ST/PwBD).
- Entrance exams
- SAIL hires engineers as Management Trainee (Technical). The entry test changes by year. SAIL's 2024 round used GATE-2024 scores. The 2025 notice used SAIL's own online exam instead, followed by a group discussion (GD) and an interview. Always read that year's notice on sailcareers.com.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Running and fixing the machines that turn iron ore into steel: blast furnaces, steel-melting shops, rolling mills, power and water systems, and the control systems that run them. Also checking quality, planning shutdowns, keeping people safe and cutting wastage. Work happens in a plant or mine, often in a steel township.
A day in the work
You reach the plant early, often in a safety helmet and boots, and sit in a shift handover meeting. Then you walk the shop floor with your team to check furnaces, motors, cranes or rolling lines and to look at what broke overnight. You sort out a problem with operators and maintenance staff, and you check data on temperature, quality or power use. Evenings may bring planning meetings or a night shift when the plant needs you. Life is usually in a SAIL township, which is close-knit and far from a big city.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 11–12Take PCM. Keep your marks steady, because the degree marks you finish with matter later. SAIL asked for 65% average in its 2025 notice.
- Step 2 · After Class 12Get into a full-time B.Tech/B.E. in Mechanical, Metallurgy, Electrical, Chemical, Instrumentation, Civil or Computer. Most students use JEE Main or a state entrance exam. The college must be recognised by UGC/AICTE. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 3 · 4 years of B.TechAim for 65% or more, averaged over all semesters (55% for SC/ST/PwBD). Study your core subjects well, because the first test has a 100-mark domain section. Do internships at a plant if you can.
- Step 4 · Final year or afterApply when SAIL publishes its Management Trainee (Technical) notice. In 2025 the age limit was 28 years, and the notice was out in November. The first stage was an online exam of 200 marks: a 100-mark domain test and a 100-mark aptitude test. You had to clear 50 percentile in each part (40 percentile for SC/ST/OBC-NCL/PwBD) to move ahead. If SAIL uses GATE again, you will need a valid GATE score for that year.
- Step 5 · GD and interviewIn 2025, candidates were called for group discussion and interview in a 1:3 ratio to the posts, branch-wise and category-wise. The final merit list combined the online exam, GD and interview in a 75:10:15 ratio. You show original certificates at this stage.
- Step 6 · Medical and joiningSelected candidates must meet SAIL's physical standards. The 2025 notice listed minimum weight 45 kg and height 155 cm, with limits on eyesight and no colour blindness. Women get suitable relaxation in height and weight. You can be posted to any SAIL plant, unit or mine in India.
- Step 7 · 1 year training, then 1 year probationYou join as Management Trainee on paid training for one year. After that you become Assistant Manager (E1 grade) and spend one year on probation.
Your real chances
In the 2025 notice, SAIL advertised 124 Management Trainee (Technical) posts across seven branches (tentative). I could not find an official figure for how many people applied, so we cannot give odds. Expect heavy competition.

What people earn
During the 1-year training: basic pay ₹50,000 a month in the scale ₹50,000–1,60,000. After training you become Assistant Manager (E1 grade) in the scale ₹60,000–1,80,000. You also get DA, perks, PF, gratuity, HRA/housing and free medical cover for self and dependents. SAIL's notice gave an approximate CTC of ₹16–17 lakh a year (2025 notice, not counting PRP and location allowances).
You start on a fixed company pay scale, and the pay then grows with grade, promotions and where you are posted, such as the plant town, mine or head office.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
SC/ST/PwBD candidates can apply with 55% marks instead of 65%. The 2025 notice reserved 7 posts for PwBD across branches and was open to orthopedically disabled candidates with 40% or more disability. Upper age limit relaxation: SC/ST 5 years, OBC-NCL 3 years, PwBD 10–15 years. Women get relaxation in the minimum height and weight, but the notice did not mention a separate quota for women.
Try it now
- Class 7–9Do a rust test. Put three iron nails in plain water, salty water and oil for a week. Write down what you see. Then ask why steel makers add other metals to iron.
- Class 10–12Watch one free video lecture a week on how iron and steel are made (search 'iron making' or 'steel making' on NPTEL). Keep PCM marks strong for B.Tech admission.Open link ↗
- College or afterTake a free NPTEL or SWAYAM course in your own branch (for example, materials, thermodynamics or electrical machines). It helps with the 100-mark domain test and with interviews.Open link ↗
Good to know
- The list says 'GATE', but this is not fixed. SAIL used GATE-2024 scores in 2024. Its 2025 notice used its own online exam instead. Read the newest notice before you plan.
- In the 2025 notice SAIL listed 124 posts. Electrical (44), Mechanical (30) and Metallurgy (20) had the most. The number of posts changes every year.
- Eligibility depends on your final aggregate percentage. A 'good college' alone is not enough if your marks fall below the cut-off.
- Workers on the shop floor (diploma and ITI level) are hired through separate SAIL notices. This profile is only about the engineer (officer) entry.
