Is this for me?
- Applying rules fairly and making sure workers get what they are owed
- Mix of fieldwork, files and talking to people
- A stable central government job with a clear career path
- You can be posted anywhere in India and transferred, which affects family life
- Some employers push back, so you must stay firm and polite
- Vacancies are irregular, so you may wait and prepare for more than one year
- Class 11–12 subjects
- No fixed Class 12 subjects. You can take Science, Commerce or Arts. What counts is a bachelor's degree in any subject from a recognised university or institute.
- First degree
- Any bachelor's degree (usually 3 years). Commerce, law, economics or public administration help with the work, but they are not required.
- Entrance exams
- UPSC Combined Recruitment Test (a pen-and-paper written test) for the EPFO, followed by a UPSC interview. This is separate from the UPSC Civil Services exam.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Checking that employers and factories pay provident fund (PF) dues on time and enrol all eligible workers. Inquiries, recovery of unpaid dues, settling claims, accounts, cash book and bank reconciliation, pension and legal work, and office administration.
A day in the work
You might start by reading files on a company that has not paid PF for its workers. Then you visit its office or factory, check wage registers and speak to the owner and a few workers. Back at the EPFO office you write the inquiry report, pass orders to recover the dues and answer questions from workers. On an accounts desk, you would instead check bills, the cash book and bank statements.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 11–12Take any stream you like. Build a habit of reading the newspaper, practising basic maths and writing clear English. These help later in the written test and interview.
- Step 2 · College (about 3 years)Finish any bachelor's degree from a recognised university. The 2025 notice asked for a degree in any subject. Check the notice each year for the cut-off date by which you must hold it.
- Step 3 · When UPSC advertisesApply online on upsconline.nic.in during the short application window. In 2025 the age limit was 30 for General/EWS, 33 for OBC, 35 for SC/ST and 40 for PwBD. The fee was ₹25, and women, SC, ST and PwBD candidates paid nothing. Vacancies are not advertised every year.
- Step 4 · Combined Recruitment TestA pen-and-paper multiple-choice test, held on 30 November 2025 in the last cycle. It is reported to be 2 hours long, covering English, general awareness, polity, economy, accounting principles, labour laws and industrial relations, basic maths and statistics, and computers. Only those who qualify go to the interview. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 5 · Document check and UPSC interviewShortlisted candidates send documents (degree, category and disability certificates) for checking, then attend an interview of about 100 marks at UPSC, Delhi. The final merit list is reported to count the written test 75% and the interview 25%. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 6 · Joining and trainingSelected candidates are appointed as Group B officers at EPFO, headquartered in New Delhi, and can be posted anywhere in India. EPFO arranges induction training after joining; the details are in the appointment letter. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 7 · ProbationProbation is two years. After that the post is permanent. Later promotions inside EPFO are decided by EPFO's service rules, which we have not verified.
Your real chances
In 2025, UPSC advertised 156 EO/AO vacancies. Reports say about 458 candidates were shortlisted for interview, plus 116 provisionally (reported). We could not find an official figure for the total number of applicants. Competition is high because the number of seats is small.

What people earn
Level 8 in the Pay Matrix (7th CPC), plus allowances, as stated in UPSC Special Advertisement 52/2025. Group B, permanent post.
Pay starts at a fixed government pay level and grows with promotions and allowances, which are higher in big cities, so postings in metros usually come with higher housing allowance.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
Of the 156 EO/AO vacancies in 2025, 9 were reserved for persons with benchmark disabilities (PwBD), and the upper age limit was 40 for PwBD candidates. The notice also encouraged women to apply, and women, SC, ST and PwBD candidates paid no fee. Check the notice for which disability categories are suitable for the post.

Good to know
- Important for this year: the latest EO/AO notice found is Special Advertisement 52/2025, for 156 posts. News reports say the 2026 UPSC notice (52/2026) covers only Assistant Provident Fund Commissioner posts, and a planned EO/AO requisition was withdrawn (reported). Check upsc.gov.in for any new EO/AO notice.
- EO/AO is a Group B post. Assistant Provident Fund Commissioner (APFC) is a higher Group A post, with a slightly higher age limit, in the same recruitment.
- The 2025 notice stated that the age limit is relaxed by 5 years for existing EPFO employees. SC/ST, OBC, PwBD and ex-servicemen relaxations also apply.
- Recruitment depends on vacancies sent by EPFO to UPSC, so the gap between notices can be long. Many students keep a backup exam such as SSC CGL or banking.
