Textile Designer
Designs patterns, weaves, prints and fabric finishes for clothing, home furnishing and industry.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Working with colour, texture, pattern and your hands, and seeing a design become real cloth
- Meeting weavers, printers and craftspeople, and learning how fabric is actually made
- Mixing art with practical problem-solving, like what will print well, wash well and sell
- Entrance exams are competitive, and the course costs several lakh rupees, so budget and backup options matter
- Deadlines and buyer changes can mean long hours, and your first jobs may be repetitive sampling work
- Good jobs are concentrated in a few cities and textile hubs, so you may need to relocate
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 pass in any stream: Science, Commerce or Arts. Maths is not needed for B.Des. For NIFT, the 2026 bulletin asks only for a pass in Class 12 (or appearing), plus an age limit (below 24 on 1 August of the admission year, with 5 years' relaxation for SC/ST/PwD). NID also takes students who have passed or are appearing in Class 12.
- First degree
- B.Des (Bachelor of Design) in Textile Design, or Textile and Apparel Design, 4 years. M.Des is optional after that.
- Entrance exams
- NIFT: NIFTEE, conducted by NTA. It has GAT (computer-based), CAT (a 3-hour drawing and design paper) and then a Situation Test, a hands-on task with materials. NID: Design Aptitude Test (DAT), with Prelims first and then Mains (a studio test and an in-person round).
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Creating woven, printed, knitted, embroidered and dyed fabric designs. Making colour palettes, sampling and swatches. Working with mills, weavers, printers and craft clusters. Developing fabrics for fashion, home furnishing (curtains, bedsheets, upholstery, rugs) and technical uses. Following trends and delivering to export and retail buyers.
A day in the work
You start the morning checking colour cards and fabric swatches that came back from the dye house or print unit. Then you sit at the table or computer to draw a new repeat pattern or set up a weave on screen, and you try different colour versions. After lunch you may be on a call with a buyer or a weaver, explaining what you want and fixing problems like colour bleeding or a thread count that does not work. Before you leave, you update your sample book for next week's presentation.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 8–11Choose any stream. You do not need Maths for B.Des. Build the habits the entrance tests check: sketching daily, working with colour, noticing patterns, and making things by hand. If your school offers art, textiles or craft, take it.
- Step 2 · Class 12 (apply in the months before your Class 12 exam)Apply to NIFT through NIFTEE and/or to NID through its DAT. For the 2027 session, NID's handbook shows applications from 10 September to 30 November 2026 and DAT Prelims on 20 December 2026. NIFTEE 2027 registration is reported to run from 16 October to 16 November 2026, with the exam on 10 January 2027. Always confirm the dates on the official portals. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 3 · Second stage (about March–June)NIFT shortlists you from GAT and CAT for a Situation Test. B.Des merit is GAT 30%, CAT 50% and the Situation Test for the rest. NID calls roughly 1.5 times the seats for DAT Mains (a studio test and an in-person round), and in 2026 the Prelims score only shortlisted candidates (reported).
- Step 4 · Counselling and seatNIFT seats are given through online counselling. You pay an admission fee to confirm the seat; in 2026 it was Rs 1,91,700 for the semester on a regular seat. NID allots seats by merit, category and campus choice. Textile design seats are few at NID, so keep other options open.
- Step 5 · 4 yearsB.Des with a foundation year first. At NID Ahmedabad, the discipline is allotted after two semesters of Design Foundation, based on merit and preference. Then you specialise in textiles: weaving, surface and print, dyeing, materials. Expect studio projects, work with craft communities and industry internships, and a final project (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 6 · After the degreeJoin a mill, export house, home-furnishing or fashion brand, or a design studio. Or freelance, or start your own label or studio. Many build a portfolio first, because employers look at your work.
- OptionalM.Des at NIFT or NID, or a master's in textile, material or surface design.
Ways in
- NIFT B.Des (Textile Design)Class 12 in any stream, then NIFTEE (GAT + CAT + Situation Test). Textile Design is one of the B.Des disciplines at many NIFT campuses. The age limit is below 24 on 1 August of the admission year (5 years' relaxation for SC/ST/PwD).
- NID B.Des (Textile Design / Textile and Apparel Design)Class 12 in any stream, then NID DAT (Prelims and Mains). In 2026-27, textile intake was 19 at Ahmedabad and 25 each at the Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh campuses (Textile and Apparel Design).
- Diploma first, degree later (lateral entry)NIFT has lateral entry (NLEA) into B.Des for candidates with a recognised diploma of at least one year in a relevant field. Check the information bulletin for the exact rules. Private and other university B.Des programmes also exist, each with its own entry test and fees. Check recognition before you apply.
Your real chances
In 2026, NTA reported 21,307 unique candidates registered for NIFTEE Stage 1, with over 13,900 registering for the B.Des General Ability Test. 12,065 were shortlisted for the undergraduate second stage. NIFT's 2026 seat matrix lists about 3,400 regular B.Des seats across all disciplines, of which Textile Design is about 681 (reported). Many candidates apply for several disciplines, so these numbers are not one-to-one. At NID, textile seats are very few: 19 at Ahmedabad and 25 at each newer campus (Textile and Apparel Design).

What people earn
Pay starts modest for freshers and grows with a strong portfolio, specialist skills and experience, and it differs a lot between a big export house or brand in a metro, a small mill or studio, and freelance or own-label work, where income can be uneven.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
NID's 2026-27 application fee was Rs 2,000 for women (except SC/ST/PwD) against Rs 3,000 for General candidates, Rs 1,500 for SC/ST and Rs 500 for PwD. NIFT's 2026 application fee was Rs 500 for SC/ST/PwD against Rs 2,000 for others, and it gives 5 years' age relaxation to SC/ST/PwD for B.Des. NIFT also reserves two extra B.Des seats at every campus for artisans.
Try it now
- Class 7–9Collect 10 small pieces of old cloth (cotton, silk, jute, synthetic). Stick them in a notebook and write how each feels, how it is made (woven or knitted) and where it is used. Then draw one repeating pattern inspired by a local print or weave.
- Class 10–12Read the 'Design Aptitude Test' sections of NID's handbook to see what is asked. Then spend 30 minutes a day on observation drawing and colour practice, using free sample papers from the official sites rather than paid classes.Open link ↗
- College or afterVisit a handloom or craft cluster, or a government handloom or crafts emporium, and document one weave or print technique with photos and a short note. Make this the first piece in your portfolio.
Good to know
- No licence or registration is needed to work as a textile designer. Your portfolio and skills are what count.
- Textile design is not the same as B.Tech in Textile Technology or Textile Engineering. That is an engineering degree that needs Physics, Chemistry and Maths. See the textile-engineer profile.
- NIFT and NID are both competitive and costly. Apply to more than one design college so you have backups.
- NIFT also keeps two extra B.Des seats at every campus for artisan-category candidates, which suits students from weaving or craft families.
