Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Making something real that people wear every day
- Mixing drawing and creativity with materials, fit and how things are built
- Seeing an idea go from sketch to a physical sample
- The field is small, and good jobs cluster in a few cities and factory hubs
- It is technical and detail-heavy, with deadlines and many sample corrections
- Study is costly, and first salaries may feel low compared with the fees
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 pass in any stream from a recognised board, or an equivalent exam, or NIOS with at least five subjects. FDDI's 2026 guidelines set no compulsory subjects. Students still waiting for Class 12 results can apply and submit the result by 30 September. The age limit was 25 years on 1 July 2026.
- First degree
- B.Des in Footwear Design and Production, 4 years (8 semesters), at FDDI (Footwear Design & Development Institute). FDDI is an Institution of National Importance under the FDDI Act, 2017.
- Entrance exams
- FDDI AIST (All India Selection Test), held once a year. In 2026 it was on 10 May. FDDI also accepts valid national-level scores such as CUET or UCEED for UG entry, and these students can skip AIST.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Researching trends and the foot; sketching designs; choosing materials, lasts and soles; making patterns and samples; working with factory teams on costs, quality and deadlines; presenting collections to brands or buyers.
A day in the work
You start by checking the day's samples that came back from the factory. You hold a new sandal, bend the sole, and note that the strap rubs at the heel. Then you sit at the desk or screen to fix the pattern and update the design sheet. In the afternoon you meet the merchandising and production teams about cost and deadlines, and maybe pick leather or sole materials. Before leaving, you sketch the next season's ideas.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 9–11Any stream will do. Build a habit of sketching, observing and making things by hand. Look closely at how shoes are built: sole, upper, lining, stitching. Subjects are not the barrier here. Creativity and curiosity are.
- Step 2 · Class 12Pass Class 12 in any stream. Check the age limit, which was 25 years on 1 July in 2026. You can apply before results are out, but the result must reach the institute by 30 September of the admission year.
- Step 3 · Class 12 (about January–May)Apply on the FDDI website and take AIST. For 2026, the admission calendar showed applications opening on 1 January and closing on 20 April (30 April with late fee). AIST was on 10 May at 36 cities. The application fee was ₹600 for General/OBC/EWS and ₹300 for SC/ST/PwD. Dates change every year, so check FDDI's site for 2027. Instead of AIST, you can use a valid CUET or UCEED score. The AIST paper is a written, paper-based test of aptitude, general awareness and design aptitude (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · Counselling (June–July)FDDI publishes a merit list. It then holds counselling, where seats are given by rank, campus and category. You pay the fee to confirm the seat. Counselling dates are announced on FDDI's website each year. In 2026, classes began on 29 July.
- Step 5 · 4 yearsB.Des in Footwear Design and Production. You learn drawing and visual communication, foot anatomy and comfort, materials, last and sole basics, and pattern making. Teaching is studio-based, with internships and industry projects.
- Step 6 · After the degreeEntry jobs listed by FDDI include junior or trainee footwear designer, product development executive, CAD or design support, merchandising and sourcing, and quality or production coordination. Employers are footwear brands, export houses, factories and design studios.
- OptionalM.Des in Footwear Design and Production (2 years), or other design programmes in India or abroad.
Ways in
- After Class 12: B.Des via AISTThe main route. Any stream, 4 years, entry through the FDDI AIST rank and counselling.
- After Class 12: B.Des using a CUET or UCEED scoreFDDI's guidelines allow a valid national-level score for UG admission, and these students can skip AIST. Your rank is mapped to the AIST rank list. Seats left vacant after AIST counselling may also go to such candidates.
- After any graduation: M.Des in Footwear Design and ProductionA 2-year master's open to a bachelor's degree in any discipline, with no age limit, through AIST. For 2026-27, FDDI's page lists 50 seats at Noida and 30 at Chennai.
Your real chances
For 2026-27, FDDI's own page lists B.Des footwear seats at 12 campuses: Noida 80, Chennai 80, Rohtak, Chandigarh, Fursatganj, Guna, Chhindwara, Hyderabad and Patna 60 each, Ankleshwar 40, and Jodhpur and Kolkata 30 each. That is about 680 seats (my addition), plus 10% extra seats for NRI or industry-sponsored candidates. I could not find an official count of how many students applied.

What people earn
Pay is modest at the start and grows with skill, the brand or factory you work for and the city. Big brands and export houses usually pay differently from small units, and designers who build a name or start their own label can earn more, though with less certainty.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
FDDI's 2026-27 seat plan reserves seats for SC, ST, OBC, EWS (10%) and PwD (5%) candidates in each programme. The AIST application fee is lower (₹300) for SC/ST/PwD candidates. There is no separate quota for girls.
Try it now
- Class 7–9Collect three old shoes or sandals (with a parent's permission). Draw each from the side, top and bottom, and label the parts you can name, such as upper, sole, heel and strap. Then sketch one new sandal of your own.
- Class 10–12Read the School of Footwear Design & Production page on FDDI's site. Note what the 4-year course covers, and start a sketchbook with at least 20 shoe drawings.Open link ↗
- College or afterBuild a small portfolio of 5 footwear concepts with sketches, material notes and a short note on who would wear each one. Try modelling one in free 3D software such as Blender.Open link ↗
Good to know
- FDDI is the main specialised institute for footwear design in India. It runs 12 campuses, and the footwear B.Des is offered at all of them.
- Fees differ a lot between campuses. Check each campus's fee line before you list preferences.
- FDDI changes dates and rules each year. Read the current prospectus on fddiindia.com, not old coaching or college-listing sites.
- Footwear design is a niche field. If you like it but also want wider choices, fashion, accessories and product design use many of the same skills.
