Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Turning a plain product into something a shopper picks up
  • Working with materials, printing and factory teams to see ideas become real
  • Seeing your work on real shelves and in shops
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Tight deadlines and many rounds of changes from brand teams
  • Budget and legal limits, such as label rules, that cut into creative ideas
  • Long study years, and the need to keep learning new materials and printing methods
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 in any stream (Science, Commerce or Arts). Most design entrance tests ask for Class 12 passed or appearing, and many set a minimum aggregate of around 45–50% (reported). For the IIP postgraduate diploma you need a graduate degree, usually in Science, Engineering or Technology.
First degree
B.Des (4 years) in a design school. Or the Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP): a 4-year BS in Packaging Technology, or a 2-year postgraduate diploma after graduation.
Entrance exams
UCEED (IIT Bombay) for B.Des at the participating IITs; NID DAT for B.Des at NID campuses. For IIP courses, IIP's own entrance test and interview (reported).
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Designing boxes, wrappers, pouches and labels for food, medicine, cosmetics and consumer goods; choosing materials and printing methods; working with brand teams, printers and factories; checking that packs survive transport and meet labelling rules.

A day in the work
Most mornings start with a look at the brief from a brand manager: the product, the target buyer and the shelf it will sit on. You then sketch options, test a few on screen, and check measurements with the factory or printer. In the afternoon you may review print proofs, fix a barcode or a legal line, and join a call to agree the final design. The day ends with notes for the next round of changes.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 9–12Draw and sketch every day. Practise colour, lettering and simple 3D models of everyday packs. Design portfolios are judged on drawing and thinking, so start early.
  2. Step 2 · Class 12Apply for a B.Des entrance exam: UCEED (usually held in January; the 2026 round needed Class XII first taken in 2025 or 2026, and you get two attempts in consecutive years) or NID DAT (prelims and mains, with a studio test). NID does not accept UCEED scores. (reported — check with the official body)
  3. Step 3 · 4 yearsStudy B.Des in product or graphic design at a design school. Ask whether packaging projects are part of the course, and build a portfolio of packs you have designed.
  4. Step 3 (alternative) · 4 years or after graduationTake a packaging-specific course at IIP: the 4-year BS in Packaging Technology, or the 2-year postgraduate diploma for science, engineering or technology graduates. Admission is by entrance test and interview. (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 4 · Final yearDo an internship with a brand, a packaging firm or a design studio. Learn how printing, board and plastic materials, and legal labelling rules shape a pack.
  6. Step 5 · First jobStart as a junior packaging designer. Over time, take on bigger brand projects or move into packaging development, sustainability or testing work.

Ways in

  • B.Des in a design schoolA 4-year design degree entered through UCEED or NID DAT. Packaging is usually a project area inside product or graphic design, not always a named course.
  • Packaging-specific training at IIPIIP runs a 4-year BS in Packaging Technology, a 2-year MS, and a 2-year postgraduate diploma for graduates. These lean more towards packaging science and technology than art.

What people earn

Pay depends on the employer, the city and your experience: beginners usually earn less than senior designers, and designers at large brands or export-focused firms often earn more than those at small local units.

Myth and fact

Myth: Packaging design is just making pretty boxes.
Fact: A pack must also protect the product in transit, fit the machines that fill it, use suitable materials, and meet labelling rules. Good packaging design blends art with engineering and marketing.

For girls and students with disabilities

Age cut-offs are relaxed for SC, ST and PwD candidates in UCEED, and NID also gives reserved categories a 3-year age relaxation (reported). I did not find career-specific openings for women or students with disabilities in the sources I checked.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Pick one box or wrapper at home. Sketch it from three sides, then redesign its colours and text for a made-up product. Keep the sketches in a file.
  • Class 10–12Read the UCEED 2026 eligibility page and note the rules on age and attempts. Then start a sketch book and draw one everyday object every day.Open link ↗
  • College or afterRead a packaging course prospectus on the IIP website and list the subjects it covers. Compare them with your own interests in drawing, science or business.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • The NID course list I checked had product, graphic and other design courses, but not a separate packaging design course. Ask each college how much packaging work its course includes.
  • UCEED and NID DAT are separate exams with separate rules. A UCEED rank does not count for NID, and the reverse is also true.
  • IIP is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Its courses, fees and entry rules change by centre and year, so check the current prospectus.
