Geologist / Geo-Scientist
Survey minerals, groundwater and rocks at the Geological Survey of India, CGWB or Mines Bureau.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Being outdoors, walking, climbing and reading the land
- Solving puzzles from clues in rocks, water and maps
- Work that helps the country find minerals and safe groundwater
- Long field tours in remote places, away from family
- Transfers across India, and you do not choose your first posting
- Very few seats, a competitive UPSC exam and several years of study before any job
- Class 11–12 subjects
- No fixed Class 12 rule from UPSC. The exam only asks for a master's degree in the right subject, such as Geology, Applied Geology or Hydrogeology (Geophysics and Chemistry for those posts). Most B.Sc. Geology courses ask for a science stream (PCM or PCB), but each university sets its own rule, so check the college's prospectus (reported).
- First degree
- B.Sc. with Geology (3 years), then M.Sc. in Geology / Applied Geology or a related subject (2 years). UPSC asks for a master's degree from a recognised university. For some Group B posts it also accepts an integrated master's.
- Entrance exams
- Combined Geo-Scientist Examination (CGSE) by UPSC: Preliminary, Main and Personality Test. Posts are in the Geological Survey of India (GSI, Ministry of Mines) and the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB, Ministry of Jal Shakti). A master's entrance test such as CUET-PG or IIT JAM is usually needed to get into M.Sc. (reported).
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Mapping rocks and mineral belts in the field, collecting samples, studying groundwater and aquifers, drilling and well monitoring, lab analysis, and writing technical reports for the government. In GSI this means field seasons in hills, forests and remote areas. In CGWB it means groundwater surveys and monitoring stations.
A day in the work
During field season you leave camp early with a hammer, a compass-clinometer, a map and a GPS. You walk a traverse, record the rock types and take samples. By evening you write notes and mark the day's findings on the map. Back at the office you check lab results, draw geological maps and write reports. A CGWB officer may spend the day visiting wells, checking water levels and water quality, and sitting with a drilling team.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 11–12Take the science stream (PCM or PCB). Geology is rarely taught in school, so nobody expects it from you yet. Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology all help later. Start noticing rocks, soil, rivers and hills around you. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 2 · 3 years after Class 12B.Sc. with Geology (or Applied Geology) as a main subject at a university or college. Check the college's own eligibility. Some give a seat only with a particular Class 12 mix. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 3 · 2 yearsM.Sc. in Geology, Applied Geology, Hydrogeology, Marine Geology, Earth Science or a related subject. The post decides which master's degree counts. A Geologist (Group A) needs a geology-type master's. Chemist and Geophysicist posts need Chemistry and Physics/Geophysics. Admission usually goes through a university or national entrance test (reported).
- Step 4 · Preliminary exam (applications in September, exam in Jan–Feb)UPSC puts out the CGSE notice around early September. For the 2026 exam, the notice came on 3 September 2025 and the Prelims were held on 8 February 2026. The Prelims are objective (multiple choice): General Studies (100 marks) and your stream paper, e.g. Geology (300 marks). Wrong answers lose one-third of the marks (2027 notice, reported). The Prelims only screen who goes to the Mains. The age limit is 21–32 years as on 1 January of the exam year, with relaxations. The 2026 application fee was ₹200, and women, SC, ST and PwBD candidates paid nothing (reported).
- Step 5 · Main exam (June)Three written papers in your stream, 600 marks in all. The answers are descriptive and must be written in English. For the 2026 cycle, the Mains were held on 20–21 June 2026. UPSC calls about six to seven times the number of vacancies to the Mains.
- Step 6 · Personality Test (interview)A 200-mark interview at UPSC, Dholpur House, New Delhi, held a few months after the Mains. Final merit is built from the Main and interview marks. You bring original certificates, and UPSC checks your claims against them.
- Step 7 · After selectionDocument verification and a medical check, then you are posted to GSI or CGWB. You get training and a probation period before you are confirmed. You are paid during this time. The first posting is allotted by the department, and you do not choose the station (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
Your real chances
UPSC's notice for the 2027 exam lists about 127 tentative vacancies across GSI and CGWB, and only 29 of them are Geologist (Group A) posts at GSI (reported). The notice does not publish how many people apply. Expect lakhs of science graduates to be eligible and only a small number of seats.

What people earn
Geologist (Group A) in GSI: Pay Level 10, ₹56,100–1,77,500 (7th CPC), plus allowances. Assistant Geologist (Group B): Pay Level 7, ₹44,900–1,42,400, as in the Ministry of Mines memorandum. This memorandum is older than the 2027 notice. Some job sites show a different level for Group B posts, so check the current UPSC notice (reported).

Pay starts at a fixed government scale and rises with promotions and years of service, so what you take home depends on your post, your rank and the city you are posted to; field allowances and housing rules also change the total.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
Women, SC, ST and PwBD candidates paid no application fee in the 2026 notice (reported). Age relaxation applies to SC/ST (up to 37) and OBC (up to 35) candidates, as reported for the 2026 exam. Some vacancies are kept for PwBD candidates; the 2027 notice lists 8 in GSI and 2 in CGWB (reported). Field work is part of the job, so read the notice for which posts and disabilities are marked suitable.

Good to know
- Seats are few. UPSC's notice for the 2027 exam (published September 2026) lists about 127 tentative vacancies across GSI and CGWB, and only 29 of them are Group A Geologist posts (reported). The number changes every year and can go up or down.
- Dates, age limits, vacancies and fees change every year. This profile uses the 2026 notice on upsc.gov.in and the 2027 notice (reported). Always read the current notice on upsc.gov.in before planning.
- The same exam fills Geologist, Geophysicist, Chemist and Hydrogeology posts. So a Physics or Chemistry master's can also lead to GSI or CGWB, not only Geology.
- If you miss out, geology skills also lead to work in oil and gas, mining, groundwater consulting, environmental studies and GIS.
