Oceanographer
Studies ocean currents, marine chemistry and seabed to understand climate and coastal change.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Solving puzzles about how the sea, weather and climate are linked
- Mixing Maths, Physics, Chemistry or Biology with computers and fieldwork
- Doing work that helps with cyclone, tsunami and fishing advisories
- Many years of study, often up to a PhD, before a regular post
- Few regular government posts, and a lot of short contract jobs at the start
- Weeks on ships, seasickness and posting in a few cities such as Goa, Kochi, Hyderabad or Visakhapatnam
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 Science. Physics, Chemistry and Maths (PCM) is the safest base, because physical oceanography uses a lot of Maths and Physics. PCB can lead to marine biology and marine chemistry. For the M.Sc Oceanography at CUSAT (Kochi), you need a B.Sc with Physics or Maths as the main subject and at least 55% marks. Other universities accept other B.Sc subjects (reported).
- First degree
- B.Sc (3 years) in Physics, Maths, Chemistry, Earth Science or a related subject. Then M.Sc Oceanography or Marine Science (2 years). Most scientist posts at research institutes also need a PhD.
- Entrance exams
- Entrance tests differ by university. CUSAT uses its own entrance test, which it calls CAT. It is not the MBA CAT. For research, you take the CSIR-UGC NET in 'Earth, Atmospheric, Ocean and Planetary Sciences' (NTA). Some M.Tech courses in ocean technology prefer a GATE score.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Studying how the sea moves, mixes and changes. This includes currents, waves, tides, temperature, salt, chemicals, the seabed and the life in the water. Most of the work is data analysis, computer models, lab tests and report writing. There are also short research cruises on ships. The results feed into cyclone and tsunami warnings, fishing advisories, climate studies and coastal planning.
A day in the work
You reach the institute in Goa or Hyderabad in the morning and check the latest satellite and buoy data on your computer. Then you clean the data and run a model on how a current or an eddy is moving. After lunch you might test water samples in the lab or meet your team to plan a short research cruise. On cruise days you work on the ship in shifts, but most days are spent writing code, reading papers and preparing reports.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 11–12Take Science. Choose PCM if you can, since Maths and Physics open the most doors in ocean science. If you prefer Biology, PCB still leads to marine biology and chemistry. Learn basic Python or spreadsheets, because ocean work is mostly data.
- Step 2 · 3 years after Class 12Do a B.Sc in Physics, Maths, Chemistry, Geology or a related subject. Check the M.Sc eligibility of your target university before choosing your main subject. For example, CUSAT wants Physics or Maths as the main subject with 55%.
- Step 3 · 2 yearsM.Sc Oceanography or Marine Science. CUSAT's M.Sc Oceanography has only 15 seats and admission is through its own entrance test. The notice usually comes in January–February. Goa University and Andhra University also run marine science and oceanography M.Sc programmes (reported).
- Step 4 · During or after M.ScAppear for CSIR-UGC NET in Earth, Atmospheric, Ocean and Planetary Sciences (subject code 702, with Oceanography as one specialisation). The December 2025 bulletin set the JRF age limit at 30 years. It also says the Ministry of Earth Sciences supports 25 fellowships in earth sciences through this exam. A JRF pays you a fellowship while you do a PhD.
- Step 5 · PhD, about 3–5 yearsDo a PhD at a university or research institute such as CSIR-NIO (Goa). Most scientist posts expect a PhD, or an M.Tech with a strong research record, plus published papers (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 6 · Early careerMany people start on short project jobs, for example Project Associate-I at CSIR-NIO with an M.Sc and a stipend of about ₹25,000 a month (2026 notices, reported). These are contract posts, not regular government jobs. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 7 · Regular postsApply when institutes advertise. CSIR-NIO advertised 17 Scientist posts at Pay Level 11 in 2025. INCOIS (Hyderabad) advertised 3 Scientific Assistant posts for B.Sc graduates with 60% in April 2026. It also advertised Scientist 'C' posts on deputation only, which are for serving government employees. Selection is by shortlisting and interview, and by a written test for Scientific Assistants (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
Ways in
- Science routeB.Sc (Physics, Maths, Chemistry or Earth Science), then M.Sc Oceanography or Marine Science, then NET and PhD. This is the main route to scientist posts.
- Engineering routeB.E or B.Tech (for example Civil, Mechanical, Naval Architecture, Aerospace or Environmental), then M.Tech in Ocean Technology. CUSAT's M.Tech asks for 60% marks and prefers a valid GATE score. It leads to ocean instruments, offshore structures and coastal engineering work.
- Biology routePCB, then B.Sc in Zoology, Botany or Life Sciences, then M.Sc Marine Biology or Marine Science. This leads to marine biology and bioresource projects.
Your real chances
In 2025, CSIR-NIO advertised 17 Scientist posts at Pay Level 11: 9 unreserved, 2 EWS, 4 OBC (NCL) and 2 SC. One of the 17 was reserved for candidates with hearing impairment (PwBD-HH). The institute did not publish how many people applied, so the competition for each post is not known. Posts are few and the competition is stiff.

What people earn
CSIR-NIO Scientist: Pay Level 11, ₹67,700–2,08,700 (7th CPC), about ₹1,22,629 a month in total with allowances, as per the 2025 advertisement. INCOIS Scientific Assistant: Pay Level 6, ₹35,400–1,12,400, per the April 2026 notice (reported). Project posts pay a fixed monthly stipend instead of a pay level.
Pay starts modest on short project contracts, rises steeply once you hold a regular scientist post or a PhD, and varies with the employer, with government institutes paying on fixed pay scales.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
The 2025 CSIR-NIO advertisement reserved posts for EWS, OBC (NCL), SC and ST candidates, and kept 1 of its 17 Scientist posts for PwBD (hearing impaired). For the CSIR-UGC NET JRF, age relaxation applies to women and reserved categories (reported); check the latest NTA bulletin.
Try it now
- Class 7–9Keep a one-month sea or river log. Note the tide, wave height and weather for a coastal spot you can visit. If you live inland, track the daily ocean forecasts for the Indian coast instead. Look for patterns.Open link ↗
- Class 10–12Start a free SWAYAM or NPTEL course in basic Python or Maths. Then try plotting a month of temperature or rainfall data in a spreadsheet or in Python.Open link ↗
- College or afterDownload a free ocean or climate dataset, such as sea surface temperature. Make a small chart or map and write a one-page summary of what it shows. Keep it for M.Sc and project interviews.Open link ↗
Good to know
- 'Oceanographer' is not a single job title. Real posts are called Scientist, Scientific Assistant, Project Associate, Research Fellow or Lecturer.
- Few people get regular government scientist posts each year. For example, INCOIS advertised only 5 regular posts in all in 2026 (reported). Plan for PhD, project jobs and universities as well.
- Most oceanography teaching in India is at M.Sc level. So choose your B.Sc subjects with the M.Sc eligibility in mind, and check the seat count and entrance test each year.
- Skills in Python, data analysis and GIS are now useful in almost every ocean-science job.
