Geologist / Geophysicist (ONGC)
Studies rock layers and seismic data to locate oil and gas reserves.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Puzzling out what lies kilometres underground from rocks and data
- Mixing science (Earth, Physics, Maths) with computers and real projects
- Fieldwork and a stable, well-known employer
- Very few posts each year, and some years geology or geophysics may not be advertised at all
- Transfers to remote assets, and sometimes offshore or abroad work
- Long study (about 5 years after Class 12) and a 60% marks requirement with no guarantee at the end
- Class 11–12 subjects
- Class 12 with Physics and Chemistry, plus Maths (needed for geophysics) or Biology. B.Sc Geology courses usually accept PCM or PCB, but rules differ by university, so check each one. Maths and Physics are a big help later for seismic data work.
- First degree
- B.Sc (3 years), then a Master's in Geology, Applied Geology, Petroleum Geoscience or Geophysics (2 years) or a relevant M.Tech, with at least 60% marks. For geophysicist posts, ONGC's 2025 notice also accepted an M.Sc in Physics with Electronics.
- Entrance exams
- ONGC's own Computer Based Test (CBT) and a personal interview. ONGC used GATE scores in earlier years, but its 2025 and 2026 notices were 'through CBT'.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Reading rock layers, well data and seismic (sound-wave) images of what lies underground; marking spots to drill; working with drilling and reservoir engineers; fieldwork and postings at ONGC assets and basins.
A day in the work
You might start in an office at an ONGC asset, opening a seismic section on a large screen and tracing rock layers that could hold oil or gas. After lunch you meet drilling and reservoir engineers to decide where the next well should go. Some days you visit a field site or the core store to check rock samples. Reports and data checks fill the rest of the time, and postings change every few years.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 11–12Take Physics, Chemistry and Maths or Biology. Keep Maths if you lean towards geophysics (seismic data). Marks matter: later steps ask for 60% in your degree.
- Step 2 · 3 yearsB.Sc in Geology (or Physics, Maths and Geology/Electronics combinations, if you want geophysics). Do fieldwork trips seriously. Entry to a good M.Sc is usually through a university or national entrance test, and it varies by college. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 3 · 2 yearsA Master's in Geology, Applied Geology, Petroleum Geoscience or Petroleum Geology, or an M.Tech in Geological Technology, with at least 60% marks. This is the qualification ONGC's notices ask for. For geophysics, the 2025 notice asked for a PG in Geophysics, an M.Tech in Geophysical Technology, or a PG in Physics with Electronics.
- Step 4 · Apply onlineONGC posts a notice on its careers page and takes applications online only. In 2025 the window was 10–24 January. In 2026 it was 17–31 July. The 2026 notice is for 'Geologists and Engineers' at E1 level, and the posts reported for geoscience were Geology only (4 of 52 posts, reported). The maximum age for geoscience posts was 27 for General/EWS candidates (2025 notice), with relaxation for OBC, SC/ST and PwBD (reported). The fee in 2025 was ₹1,000 for General/EWS/OBC and nil for SC/ST/PwBD (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 5 · Computer Based TestAbout 85 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours: 40 from your subject, 25 aptitude, 10 general awareness and 10 English. There is no negative marking. The 2026 CBT was held on 6 September. You need at least 45% to qualify if you are General/EWS/OBC, or 40% if you are SC/ST/PwBD (all reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 6 · InterviewAbout five candidates are called for each post, based on CBT marks. The interview is worth 15 marks and the CBT 85, so the final merit list is out of 100. You need 60% in the interview if you are General/EWS/OBC, or 40% if you are SC/ST/PwBD (reported). In 2026, interview calls went out in October (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 7 · Medical and joiningSelected candidates must pass ONGC's medical fitness standards. They then join as an officer at the E1 level, paid as per the official pay scale. Postings can be anywhere in India, and I could not confirm the exact training or probation details from an official page.
Ways in
- ONGC's own CBT (current route)Master's degree, then apply when ONGC advertises, then CBT, interview and medical. Used in 2025 and 2026.
- GATE score (earlier route)Until 2022 and earlier ONGC shortlisted geoscientists using GATE Geology & Geophysics or Physics scores. ONGC may change its method again, so read each year's notice.
- Other employersThe UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist exam (Geological Survey of India and others), Oil India, private oil and gas companies, and mining and consulting firms hire the same kind of degree.

What people earn
Level E1, basic pay scale ₹60,000–1,80,000 a month, with 3% annual increment, plus allowances (about 35% of basic under ONGC's cafeteria approach), dearness allowance, HRA or company accommodation, provident fund, and medical facility (ONGC notice, July 2026). The officer pay scales follow Department of Public Enterprises guidelines. Later levels are E-2, E-3, E-4 and so on.

A fresh E1 officer starts on a fixed public-sector scale, and pay rises with each promotion level, with extra allowances depending on posting, including remote or offshore-linked assets.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
ONGC's July 2026 notice lists vacancies reserved for persons with benchmark disabilities in Geology, along with reservation for SC, ST, OBC and EWS candidates. PwBD candidates also get age relaxation of about 10 years (reported). All selected candidates must meet ONGC's medical fitness standards, so check the notice for what applies to you.
Try it now
- Class 7–9Start a labelled rock and mineral collection from nearby places. Note where you found each piece and what it looks like.
- Class 10–12Open ONGC's recruitment notices page and read a past notice. See how the exam, age limit and qualifications are written, so you can plan your subjects early.Open link ↗
- College or afterTake a free NPTEL or SWAYAM course in geology, earth sciences or geophysics, and finish the assignments.Open link ↗
Good to know
- ONGC advertises very few geoscience posts. In 2025, geologist and geophysicist posts were about 10 of 108 vacancies (reported). The 2026 notice had only about 4 geology posts out of 52 (reported). Some years may have none, so keep other options open.
- Always trust the latest notice on ongcindia.com. Many job sites repeat old rules, such as 'GATE is compulsory'.
- The 2026 selection was still under way in October 2026, with interviews from mid-October (reported). Dates and posts for 2027 are not announced yet.
- Pay is only one part of the package. ONGC also offers allowances, housing or company accommodation, provident fund and medical cover.
