Petroleum Geologist / Geophysicist
Interprets rock and seismic data to locate oil and gas reserves.
Facts checked 29/10/2026
Is this for me?
- Reading the story of the earth in rocks, maps and graphs
- Mixing outdoor fieldwork with computer analysis
- Solving puzzles where the answer is hidden underground
- Very few posts each year, so many good candidates are left out
- Postings in remote field locations and sometimes offshore, with transfers
- Long study: 3 years of B.Sc plus 2 years of master's before the first job test
- Class 11–12 subjects
- No subject is compulsory in Class 12 to start a B.Sc. Physics, Chemistry and Maths (PCM) is the safest choice, because geophysics needs strong Physics and Maths. PCB students can also take B.Sc Geology, but some master's programmes ask for Maths or Physics at degree level. Check each college's rules.
- First degree
- B.Sc (Geology for geologists; Physics and Maths for geophysicists), 3 years. Then a 2-year M.Sc (Geology, Applied Geology, Geophysics, Applied Geophysics) or M.Tech (for example Geological or Geophysical Technology). ONGC's 2026 notice asked for a master's degree with at least 60% marks.
- Entrance exams
- IIT JAM (Geology paper, or Physics paper for geophysics) for M.Sc seats at IITs and other institutes; many universities hold their own entrance tests. For jobs: ONGC's own Computer Based Test (CBT) in 2025 and 2026. GATE (Geology and Geophysics, GG) is used for M.Tech/PhD admission and by some employers.
- Licence or registration
- None needed to start working.
What the work is like
Studying rocks, maps, well logs and seismic (sound-wave) images of the underground to decide where oil and gas may be found and where to drill. Includes field visits, computer interpretation, and team work with drilling and reservoir engineers.
A day in the work
You reach the office or field camp and open yesterday's well data on your computer. You compare rock layers from a drilled well with seismic images of the area. You then meet drilling and reservoir engineers to decide whether the next well should go a little to the left or deeper. Some days you drive to a rig or core store to look at actual rock samples. In the evening you write up your findings for the team.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 10–12Take science in Class 11–12. Physics and Maths keep every door open, including geophysics. Notice whether you enjoy maps, rocks, graphs and outdoor work. This job mixes all four.
- Step 2 · 3 years after Class 12B.Sc Geology (for a geologist path) or B.Sc Physics with Maths (for a geophysicist path). Do your field trips and lab work seriously. Employers look for a good record, and ONGC's 2026 notice asked for 60% in the master's.
- Step 3 · Final year of B.ScApply for an M.Sc seat. IIT JAM 2027 is on 14 February 2027 (run by IIT Kharagpur). Seats at IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur and IIT (ISM) Dhanbad are filled by JAM rank. Many state universities use their own tests. Any bachelor's degree holder can sit JAM, but each M.Sc has its own subject rules.
- Step 4 · 2 yearsM.Sc Geology / Applied Geology / Geophysics / Applied Geophysics, or M.Tech in Geological or Geophysical Technology. Choose projects in petroleum geology, seismic interpretation or well logging if you can.
- Step 5 · After the master'sApply when ONGC or Oil India advertise. In 2026 (Advt. 2/2026) ONGC picked geologists and engineers at E1 level through its own CBT: 85 questions in 120 minutes covering domain knowledge, aptitude, general awareness and English. In 2025 it also used a CBT. Earlier years used GATE scores (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 6 · Interview, medical, joiningAfter the CBT, ONGC called shortlisted candidates for an interview and checked medical fitness. Those selected join as trainee executives at E1 level. Postings can be at field locations across India. Read the current advertisement for training and service-bond details. (reported — check with the official body)
Ways in
- Public sector (ONGC, Oil India)Master's degree, then the company's own recruitment test and interview. Very few posts and a lot of competition, but stable pay and field-to-office career growth.
- Private and oilfield-service companiesA master's degree (M.Tech helps) plus software skills for seismic and well-log interpretation. Companies hire by their own tests and interviews. Work is project-based and can mean jobs abroad or in remote areas.
- Research or teachingM.Sc, then GATE or CSIR-NET, then PhD. Leads to institutes, universities and company research labs.
Your real chances
In 2026, ONGC advertised 52 posts for geologists and engineers together (Advt. 2/2026), and only about 4 of them were for geology (reported). In 2025 it advertised 108 posts across engineering and geoscience. The number of applicants was not published in the sources I could open.

What people earn
ONGC E1 grade (IDA scale): basic pay scale ₹60,000–₹1,80,000 a month as listed for the 2026 notice (reported); ONGC's own advertisement says the package is approximately ₹26 lakh a year CTC (cost to company).

Public-sector pay starts well and grows with promotions and field allowances, while private and overseas oilfield jobs can pay more but depend on oil prices and project contracts.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
ONGC's 2026 notice reserves some vacancies for persons with benchmark disabilities and lists the eligible disability categories for Geology. SC/ST/OBC/EWS reservation and age relaxation apply as per the notice (reported); SC/ST/PwBD candidates paid no application fee (reported). Fieldwork can be physically demanding, so check the medical fitness standards in the advertisement.
Try it now
- Class 7–9Start a rock and mineral notebook. Collect safe samples from your area, note where you found each, and try to sort them as igneous, sedimentary or metamorphic.
- Class 10–12Read the free NCERT Class 11 Geography book 'Fundamentals of Physical Geography' (earth's interior and rocks). Then try the Physics and Maths of waves, since seismic work uses them.Open link ↗
- College or afterDownload the free GATE Geology and Geophysics (GG) past papers and answer keys. Try a few Part A questions to see the level, and look for free NPTEL earth-science courses on the NPTEL site.Open link ↗
Good to know
- ONGC's own pages show that the 2025 and 2026 geoscience hiring was by CBT, not by GATE score. Always read the latest advertisement before planning.
- The number of geology posts is small. In 2026 only about 4 of 52 posts were for geologists (reported). Keep other doors open, such as GSI through UPSC or environment and groundwater work.
- Geophysicist posts at ONGC have in the past accepted M.Sc Geophysics, M.Tech Geophysical Technology or M.Sc Physics with Electronics (2025 notice, reported). Check each year's list.
- This is fieldwork-heavy and often far from big cities. That suits some people very well and others not at all.
