Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Working outdoors and in the community instead of sitting at a desk all day
  • Practical problem-solving: finding the cause of a dirty water or disease problem and fixing it
  • A stable government job where the work protects people's health
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Field work in heat, rain, crowded areas and smelly places, such as drains and waste sites
  • Dealing with unhappy shop owners or residents when you have to enforce rules
  • Few vacancies at a time, and postings or transfers that may take you away from your home town
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 pass. The All India Institute of Local Self-Government (AIILSG) says any stream is accepted for its Sanitary Inspector diploma. Some states ask for Biology: a Tamil Nadu health-inspector notice in 2021 asked for Class 12 with Biology, or Botany and Zoology (reported). Some states also ask for the state language, for example Gujarati or Hindi in Gujarat's 2026 notice (reported).
First degree
No degree is needed for most posts. The usual route is a Sanitary Inspector or Health Inspector diploma, which is 1 year at many institutes and 2 years in some states. A government ITI trade called Health Sanitary Inspector (1 year) is also accepted by some states. B.Sc in a related subject is sometimes preferred, but I could not confirm it from an official source.
Entrance exams
There is no single national exam. Each state or city runs its own recruitment. Examples are the Gujarat Subordinate Service Selection Board (GSSSB), the Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board (DSSSB) for Delhi's municipal corporations, and state health departments and municipalities.
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Checking food shops, hotels, markets and water supply for hygiene; collecting water samples; controlling mosquitoes and outbreaks of disease; checking waste disposal and toilets; keeping records; educating people on health and hygiene; and serving notices or taking action under public health laws.

A day in the work
You start at the municipal or health office, check complaints from the day before, and plan your inspections. Then you head out to a ward or a block. You might check a hotel kitchen, take a water sample from a tap, look for mosquito breeding in a drain, or visit a market. You note what you find, explain the rules to the shop owner and issue a notice if needed. Back at the office you write your reports and update records. During monsoon or an outbreak, expect extra field work and longer days.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 10–12Finish Class 12. Take Biology if you can, because some states ask for it. Check the rules of the state where you want to work: the language, the age limit and which diploma is accepted. These differ from state to state.
  2. Step 2 · 1 to 2 years after Class 12Do a recognised Sanitary Inspector or Health Inspector diploma. AIILSG runs a 1-year diploma open to Class 12 pass from any stream. The DGT's ITI trade Health Sanitary Inspector is also 1 year. Some states run a 2-year Multipurpose Health Worker (Male) / Health Inspector / Sanitary Inspector course with field training. Check that the institute is recognised by your state government.
  3. Step 3 · Watch for noticesRecruitment comes in bursts, so watch the websites of the state selection board and your municipal corporation. Examples from 2026: Gujarat's board advertised 22 Sanitary Inspector posts, with applications from 17 to 31 August 2026 (reported). Haryana's Health Sanitary Inspector notice is only expected in November–December 2026 (reported, not confirmed). Age limits are usually about 18 to 27–33 years, with relaxation for reserved categories (reported).
  4. Step 4 · Written examIn Gujarat's 2026 notice, the exam has two parts: general subjects (reasoning, maths, current affairs, languages) and a subject paper on the job. It is 210 marks, with negative marking and a 40% minimum in each part (reported). Delhi's DSSSB also uses an online exam for Assistant Public Health Inspector posts (reported). The pattern differs by state, so read the latest notice.
  5. Step 5 · Document verification and joiningCandidates are usually called for certificate checks in order of merit. In Gujarat, about twice the number of vacancies are called (reported). After that you get a posting letter from the municipality or health department.
  6. Step 6 · First years on the jobYou may work under a senior inspector or health officer, learn the local laws and records, and go through probation as per state rules. In Gujarat's 2026 notice, new recruits get a fixed pay for the first 5 years before moving to the regular pay scale (reported). Some city bodies also hire on short contracts.
  7. OptionalLater you can study further in public health or environmental health. You can also try for promotion to senior or chief sanitary inspector, or for related exams such as food safety.

Ways in

  • 1-year diploma or ITI certificateClass 12, then a 1-year Sanitary Inspector diploma (for example AIILSG) or the DGT's ITI trade Health Sanitary Inspector. Gujarat's 2026 notice accepted either (reported). This is the quickest route.
  • 2-year Health Inspector / MPHW (Male) diplomaSome states, such as Tamil Nadu, run a 2-year course that includes field training in corporations, municipalities and primary health centres. This is the usual route if you want a health department post in those states.

What people earn

Official pay

Pay depends on the state or city. DSSSB notices for Delhi municipal posts that need a Sanitary Inspector diploma list Pay Level 4 (₹25,500–81,100, 7th CPC) and, for some posts, Level 3 (₹21,700–69,100) (reported: I could not match each pay level to a post name from the pages I could read). Gujarat's 2026 notice offered a fixed ₹26,000 a month for the first 5 years, then Level 4 (reported). Allowances are extra, and the post is Group C.

Pay is modest at the start and rises slowly with years of service and promotion, and it varies a lot between states, big-city corporations and small municipalities, and between permanent and contract posts.

Myth and fact

Myth: A sanitary inspector just supervises sweepers and cleaning staff.
Fact: Cleaning is only one part. The training covers disease control, safe drinking water and water sampling, food hygiene, health education and keeping records. The inspector also enforces public health rules in shops, markets and homes.

For girls and students with disabilities

Government notices give age relaxation to reserved categories, and Delhi's notice has a category-wise relaxation table. Whether a particular post is marked as suitable for people with disabilities differs by post, so check each notice. The job involves a lot of field work and walking. I could not confirm any official physical standard from the pages I read.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Do a small hygiene survey of your school or lane. Note any stagnant water, overflowing bins or leaking taps, then write a one-page report and give it to your teacher or resident association.
  • Class 10–12Join a cleanliness or health awareness drive as a volunteer on MY Bharat (for ages 15+). Also read the 'environmental sanitation' part of the National Health Mission's health worker guidelines to see what the job covers.Open link ↗
  • College or afterRead the DGT's Health Sanitary Inspector curriculum to see what you would learn: water testing, waste, disease control. Then ask your local municipal health office whether you can see a public health awareness camp.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • The same job goes by different names: Sanitary Inspector, Health Inspector, Assistant Public Health Inspector, Multipurpose Health Worker (Male). Read the qualification line in each notice, because it changes from state to state.
  • Make sure your diploma is from an institute recognised by the state government. Gujarat's 2026 notice asked for a recognised diploma or ITI certificate (reported).
  • Posts come in small batches, from a few vacancies in one town to a few hundred in a state. A notice may not come every year in your state, so keep watching official websites.
  • If you want to work more on food and need a science degree, also look at the Food Safety Officer career.
