What the work is like
Running a sub-division or block for the state government. Depending on the post you get, this can mean handling land and revenue disputes, keeping law and order as a magistrate, managing relief work and elections, or running rural development schemes. It involves a lot of meetings, file work and field visits.
A day in the work
An SDM might start the morning hearing land and revenue disputes from people who have travelled from villages. Then comes a review meeting with the tehsildar and police on a festival or law-and-order plan. After lunch there may be a field visit to check flood relief, a school, or a government scheme. The evening is often more files, phone calls and signatures, and an emergency can change the whole day.
The path, step by step
- Step 1 · Class 7–12No special subjects are needed, so pick the stream you like and do well in it. Build habits that this exam rewards: reading a newspaper daily, writing clearly in Hindi and English, and knowing basic Indian polity, history and geography from NCERT books.
- Step 2 · 3 years after Class 12Finish a bachelor's degree in any subject. You must have the degree by the last date to apply (reported). The age range was 21 to 40 years on 1 July 2026 (reported), with extra years for reserved categories from UP, ex-servicemen and persons with disability. Check the exact relaxations in the notice each year.
- Step 3 · PrelimsRegister once on the OTR portal, which is compulsory, then apply online during the window in the notice. The 2026 window opened on 25 June 2026. Prelims has two objective papers on OMR sheets. Paper II (CSAT) only needs 33% to qualify. Merit for Mains is decided by Paper I marks. The 2026 prelims was listed for 6 December 2026 (reported). (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 4 · MainsYou apply again for Mains, with documents. It is a written, descriptive exam. It is reported to have 8 papers worth 1,500 marks: General Hindi, Essay and six General Studies papers, two of them on Uttar Pradesh, and no optional subject. You can write in Hindi or English. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 5 · Interview and post allotmentOnly Mains qualifiers are called for the interview, which is reported to carry 100 marks. The official notice says selection is based on total marks in Mains and Interview. Your rank and your post preferences then decide whether you get Deputy Collector, DSP, BDO or another post. A few posts, such as DSP, have physical standards listed in the notice, which are checked before joining.
- Step 6 · Training (about 12–18 months, reported)New officers are reported to train at the UP Academy of Administration and Management in Lucknow, then work under a district officer as trainees. DSPs train at a police academy instead. You are paid while you train. (reported — check with the official body)
- Step 7 · Probation (2 years)Under the UP Civil Service (Executive Branch) Rules, 1982, a new officer is on probation for two years. Confirmation needs passing the departmental exams, completing training, satisfactory work and certified integrity. Other posts in the exam may have their own service rules.

Pay depends on which post you are allotted and how many years you have served, and allowances such as housing and transport add to it; promotions come slowly, based on seniority.
Myth and fact
For girls and students with disabilities
The 2026 notice lists reservation categories for SC, ST, OBC and EWS, and also for women, persons with disability and others, such as dependents of freedom fighters and skilled sportspersons, as per UP rules. Good to know
- UP PCS is not one job. The same exam fills many posts, such as Deputy Collector (SDM), DSP, Block Development Officer, ARTO and Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Tax). Which one you get depends on your rank and your preferences.
- Vacancies change a lot from year to year. The 2026 notice says about 500, and the number can go up or down. The 2024 cycle was reported at 947 posts.
- Some benefits, such as reservation and age relaxation, are for candidates with a Uttar Pradesh domicile (reported). Check the notice for the exact rules.
- Many aspirants take several years to clear it. Finishing a degree and keeping a Plan B, such as other state or central exams, is sensible.
