Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Solving puzzles at a very small scale
  • Applying physics, logic and maths to real hardware
  • Working in a team toward one shared, large goal
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Several years of study before the work becomes interesting
  • Tight deadlines and long hours before a chip goes for fabrication
  • Bugs can take days to find, which can be frustrating
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths, plus a good score in JEE Main or your state's engineering entrance for B.Tech. Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) is the most common route. Some colleges also offer VLSI electives in CSE or EE.
First degree
B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering (4 years). Many people then do a 2-year M.Tech in VLSI Design for deeper design roles.
Entrance exams
JEE Main or your state engineering entrance for B.Tech. For M.Tech, GATE in the Electronics and Communication (EC) paper. GATE 2027 is run by IIT Madras (reported).
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Writing hardware design code, designing circuits, checking that the design works before a chip is made, and testing finished chips. Engineers use specialised design software and work in teams with people who build and test the chips.

A day in the work
A chip design engineer often starts the day with a team meeting about the part of the chip they are building. Much of the morning goes to writing design code and then running simulations to check that the circuit behaves as planned. Afternoons often mean hunting down a failed test, reading timing reports or reviewing a colleague's work. Deadlines before a chip is sent for manufacturing can make some weeks very intense.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 11–12Take Physics, Chemistry and Maths. Learn basic electronics and logic in your Physics and Maths work, and practise solving problems step by step.
  2. Step 2 · Class 12Prepare for JEE Main or your state engineering entrance, and aim for a B.Tech in ECE or a closely related branch.
  3. Step 3 · 4 yearsComplete B.Tech in ECE. Choose electives in digital design, VLSI, Verilog or microprocessors, and try a small project or internship in chip design if your college offers one.
  4. Step 4 · Final year or after graduationAppear for GATE in the EC paper. The GATE 2027 exam is expected in February 2027, and the notification was released in July 2026. (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 5 · 2 yearsDo an M.Tech in VLSI Design or a related course at an IIT, NIT or other institute. Full-time GATE-qualified students at many government institutes may get a monthly stipend.
  6. Step 6 · After studyJoin a semiconductor company, design-services firm or product company as a design, verification or physical design engineer. Keep learning the industry tools on the job.

Good to knowMany people start chip design straight after B.Tech; the M.Tech is optional, and its stipend applies only to full-time students.

What people earn

Earnings vary a lot by skill, employer and city, and experienced engineers who lead design work usually earn much more than beginners.

Myth and fact

Myth: You need an M.Tech before you can work as a chip designer.
Fact: Many people start after B.Tech, and government programmes are training large numbers of B.Tech students with VLSI coursework. An M.Tech helps most for deeper design and research roles.

For girls and students with disabilities

For GATE, qualifying marks are lower for SC, ST and PwD candidates (reported). Several IITs also show lower total fees for SC and ST students in their 2026 fee tables (reported). No physical standards apply to this career.

Try it now

  • Class 7–9In your school science club, build a simple circuit with a battery, a switch and an LED. Explain to a friend how the switch controls the light.
  • Class 10–12From your textbook, learn what AND, OR and NOT logic gates do. Draw their truth tables and check them with a simple sum of your own.
  • College or afterEnrol in the free NPTEL course CMOS Digital VLSI Design and watch the lectures. The optional certificate exam has a fee, so you can skip it.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • Many people enter chip design straight after B.Tech. A master's helps for deeper design and research roles, but it is not the only way in.
  • A GATE score is usually valid for three years from the date of the result, so it can also help with some public sector job applications.
  • The AICTE-linked stipend is for full-time M.Tech students. Part-time, sponsored or PG diploma students usually do not get it.
