Is this for me?

People in this work enjoy
  • Watching a child test your idea and react to it
  • Making physical models with your hands, not only on screens
  • Solving small puzzles of safety, cost and fun in one object
It may not suit you if you dislike
  • Products may have a short life on shelves, so work can feel fast and temporary
  • Factory visits, testing and launch deadlines can mean travel and long hours
  • Strict safety rules and repeated testing can slow down a good idea
Class 11–12 subjects
Class 12 in any stream is accepted for most design entrances. IIT Guwahati, IIT Roorkee and IIITDM Jabalpur need Physics and Chemistry, plus Maths (or Biology at IIITDM Jabalpur). IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad and IIT Indore accept any stream. Drawing, observation and design sense count for more than marks in the entrance tests.
First degree
B.Des, 4 years, from an IIT or NID design school. Then an optional M.Des in Toy and Game Design, about 2.5 years, at NID Gandhinagar.
Entrance exams
UCEED (run by IIT Bombay) for B.Des seats at seven institutes. NID DAT for NID B.Des, the integrated M.Des and the M.Des programme.
Licence or registration
None needed to start working.

What the work is like

Thinking about how a child plays and learns at each age, sketching and modelling ideas, choosing safe materials, working with factories on cost and finish, and checking that each toy meets BIS safety standards before it is sold.

A day in the work
Most days start with a team meeting about a new product brief, such as a puzzle for children aged 3 to 5. You sketch ideas, then build rough cardboard or foam models that you can hold and test. Later you may refine 3D files or talk to a factory about materials and cost. The day often ends with a check of safety points, because a toy must pass testing before it can be sold.

The path, step by step

  1. Step 1 · Class 10–12Build a habit of drawing, model-making and looking closely at everyday objects. Keep your Class 12 marks strong, since most design entrances need a Class 12 pass.
  2. Step 2 · Class 12Choose your entrance. UCEED is held once a year, in January, and has a computer-based part and a sketching part. NID DAT has a registration window in the autumn and a Prelims exam in December. (reported — check with the official body)
  3. Step 3 · After Class 12Seat allotment. UCEED ranks go into a joint seat allocation for the IIT B.Des seats. Getting a rank does not guarantee a seat.
  4. Step 4 · NID onlyDAT Mains, which includes a studio test (drawing, sketching or model-making) and an interview for your discipline. (reported — check with the official body)
  5. Step 5 · 4 yearsB.Des in a product or industrial design course. Take toy and play projects and electives where your college offers them, and learn child development and material safety.
  6. Step 6 · Optional, after a bachelor's degreeM.Des in Toy and Game Design at NID Gandhinagar, which has 12 seats in this discipline. It is a 2.5-year course.

Ways in

  • RouteB.Des (4 years) through UCEED for the IIT seats, then toy or play electives or a toy-focused job
  • RouteB.Des through NID DAT, which leads to NID's own design programmes
  • RouteM.Des in Toy and Game Design (NID Gandhinagar) after a bachelor's degree
  • RouteShort diploma or certificate courses in toy making from private institutes; check each institute's recognition and fee page before you join

What people earn

Pay in toy design depends on whether you work for a large toy brand, a small studio, a factory or your own label, and on your portfolio and years of experience. Entry-level work tends to pay less than senior roles, and big cities usually offer more openings.

Myth and fact

Myth: Toy design is mainly about drawing cute characters.
Fact: Good toy design also depends on child development, the right materials, the cost of making the toy, and passing BIS safety tests before it can be sold.

For girls and students with disabilities

UCEED reserves 5% of seats in each category for persons with disability, as set out in the 2026 brochure. NID DAT application fees are lower for women and for SC, ST and PwD candidates (reported).

Try it now

  • Class 7–9Pick one toy at home. Sketch it, then write down three ways it could be made safer for a younger child. Keep it in a sketchbook.
  • Class 10–12Sketch for 20 minutes a day from life and everyday objects, then make one small model from cardboard. Drawing and model-making are the core skills both UCEED and NID test.
  • College or afterLook for a free design-related course on NPTEL to see what product and play design involves before you commit to a fee-paying course.Open link ↗

Good to know

  • UCEED is run by IIT Bombay for B.Des seats only. It is not a toy-only exam, and many toy designers come in through general product design.
  • Every toy sold in India for children under 14 needs BIS certification under the Toys (Quality Control) Order, 2020. Safety testing is part of the job.
  • Entrance rules, dates and fees change each year. Check the exam body's latest brochure before you apply. The UCEED brochure I read is for 2026.
